Pastor’s Message

As many if not most of you know, my favorite Scripture passage is Romans 5:20, which reads as follows: "Where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more." The idea, which we believe to be gloriously and eternally true, is that divine grace is perfect -- more than sufficient to confront, address, conquer, and redeem our many (human) faults, flaws, shortcomings, failures, mistakes, weaknesses, frailties, missteps, fumbles, foul-ups, and errors in judgment. This "amazing grace," firm and rigorous, is not to be confused with mere tolerance, nor is it tantamount to a lethargic, benign "acceptance" of our deep, utter brokenness. According to the witness of Scripture, God has taken the matter of our sinfulness so seriously that nothing less than an intervention proved necessary. Indeed, essential.

This is why the doctrine of the incarnation matters. Without it, Good Friday and Easter Sunday lose all significance for the purposes of salvation. The Passion becomes something less than the miracle that it most certainly was (and is): yet another story, even if admittedly compelling or perhaps even inspiring, about a brave martyrdom for one of many possible chosen causes. It's only when we consider how God was at work in-and-through the Cross that our minds are boggled and our souls are stirred. We pause to remember and reflect: the crucified one is none other than Jesus Christ, the only begotten, everlasting Son of the living God. We behold and bear witness -- as his intentions and mission merged beautifully and sublimely at Golgotha: the total, thorough, and final expunging, obliteration, and decimation of the malady with which we all, no matter how ostensibly "good" or "righteous," suffer: sin.

If sin may be likened to a disease that even the most pious and holy can't eradicate with "good works and deeds," then Christ may be discerned as both remedy and, alas, cure. As the likes of Augustine, Aquinas, Anslem, Luther, Calvin, Chesterton, and C.S. Lewis have observed, God has intervened in such a radical way that the root, source, cause, and wellspring of the problem has been ... solved. Completely, absolutely, and eternally. Forevermore. Hence, what amounts to a perpetual benediction: "It is finished." We have been healed, restored, and reconciled to God -- and there's no amount of human rebellion that can reverse this. We, captives to our own desires and pride, have been set free. God has accomplished the atoning redemption that we, paralyzed by spiritual impotence, are powerless to enact -- for ourselves, on our own behalf. This, thanks be to God, is how, to borrow a phrase, "Jesus saves." To borrow again from Jesus and Paul: "It is finished. Grace abounds."

Maybe this is why an attitude of judgment makes so little sense in the context of this community we call "Church." As Dietrich Bonhoeffer observed, “Judging others makes us blind, whereas love is illuminating. By judging others, we blind ourselves to our own evil and to the grace which others are just as entitled to as we are.”

May we, throughout the days, weeks, months, and years to come, remain truly, earnestly grateful for the grace of God, daily (prayerfully) recalling that "others," no matter how detestable or deplorable, "are just as entitled to it as we are." May we, with God's help and guidance, resist the temptation to "blind ourselves to our own evil" as we continually turn attention to the sinfulness of our neighbors. Lest we forget, Christ's Cross is effective and efficacious for the worst of sinners -- even, as the old hymn sings, "a wretch like me."

Thanks be to God and Peace be with you.
Pastor Sam

Summer Worship Schedule

We will be observing our normal summer worship schedule beginning Sunday, June 14. Our 9am service will be at the Historic Church (it is Newtown Welcome Day so you will have to park in the Eagle Road parking lot behind the church as Sycamore Street will be closed) and the 11am service will be in air-conditioned Ettenger Hall.

Olde Fashioned Strawberry Social

[Image: A delicious strawberry shortcake with whipped cream]

Our annual Olde Fashioned Strawberry Social will be on Sunday, June 7, from 11am to 1pm on the beautiful grounds of the Historic Church. The event will provide an opportunity to gather, socialize, and celebrate the summer opening of the Historic Church. All NPC members, families, friends, and the public are welcome to attend.

There will be one service on Sunday, June 7, at 10am, and the Strawberry Social will begin immediately following the service.

We will be serving strawberries and whipped cream on either pound cake or angel food cake. Hot dogs, coleslaw, chips and beverages will also be provided. There will be a limited number of chairs available so you are welcome to bring chairs and blankets. In lieu of charging for individual items, we encourage and will gratefully accept all of your generous donations. All profits will be utilized for the maintenance and beautification of the Historic Church. Please note that in the case of inclement weather, we will host the Strawberry Social in Ettenger Hall.

We look forward to seeing everyone as we gratefully rejoice in the opportunity to gather and socialize!! (We encourage everyone to please wear their name tags!)

Welcome to our 2026 Confirmation Class!

On Sunday, May 17th, we were blessed to welcome and celebrate our 2026 Confirmation Class! Along with Pastor Laura and Lynn Losch, they led us in worship and shared their faith statements with the congregation. We hope when you see them at church you will congratulate and welcome them as our newest members!

  • Long time member, Ruth Hunter, 4/27/2026.

NPC Book Club

Be Ready When the Luck Happens, famous chef Ina Garten’s memoir, is a fitting selection for the final meeting of the NPC Book Club season, which began in September with The Secret War of Julia Child. Both books reveal a different side of these two women’s lives before they became known for their culinary skills, Child as a spy in Asia during World War II and Garten as a White House policy writer in the 1970s. The Book Club will meet on June 10 at 10am in room 211 and is open to all readers. Please join us for what promises to be a lively discussion of this memoir, described as an entertaining foray into this well-loved cooking host’s illustrious life.

America 250 Celebration

In appreciation of the America 250 Celebration, the service on July 5, 2026, will be a gathering of the NPC members at the Historic Church at 10 am. It is hoped that those attending will want to dress in colonial garb as we sing patriotic hymns and have a special anthem marking this important time in history. The Historic Church played an important part in the fight for freedom, and we hope to recognize this contribution. Bells will be rung at the conclusion of the service as was done at the time of the reading of the Declaration of Independence.

The Sew Be It group have made dust caps and aprons for the women and will transform men’s old pants into knickers if they wish. (The caps and aprons will be sold at the Strawberry Social for a small amount, benefiting Outreach.)

The congregation is being asked to contribute refreshments for that day, utilizing recipes that will be available from a cookbook of compiled recipes from that time period. We will gather on the lawn following the service to partake those refreshments! The recipes are modern in nature, but with ingredients of those times.

We hope everyone who is available will participate to recognize the historic significance of that weekend and of the Historic Church’s role in that part of our history! Please join us on July 5, at 10am, for an historic remembrance.

McCaffrey’s 1% Receipt Program

Thanks to the wonderful support of our church members/food shoppers, the receipts that were submitted to McCaffrey’s for the 1% Receipt Program in 2025 raised over $2,000 to support the Historic Church. Receipts may be mailed to the church or dropped off in one of the collection boxes placed at either entrance to the sanctuary of the Historic Church and outside the church office. Once the receipts are processed, the monthly claim must be turned into McCaffrey’s by the last day of each month. As the receipts can be no more than three months old, turning your receipts in promptly will be very helpful. Again, we are extremely grateful to everyone who participates in helping us maintain the Historic Church for all to enjoy.

Petrof Grand Piano Maintenance

[Image: Close-up of the Petrof piano keys and interior action]

Did you know that the piano in our sanctuary is a Petrof Baby Grand, crafted in the Czech Republic? It was given in loving memory of Audrey Terry and Adelaide and Frank Stansel in May of 2001. This instrument has faithfully supported worship in our church for 25 years!

Over time, however, even the finest instruments require more than routine tuning. To restore its mechanics and improve the sound, our piano recently underwent needed maintenance and repair.

On April 17 and 18, the instrument was disassembled to allow for detailed work. Key leveling and “key dip” adjustments were performed to correct inconsistencies in touch and depth—subtle but important factors that affect playability and control. Each of the 88 keys was meticulously measured and regulated, restoring proper alignment and ensuring a balanced, responsive touch across the entire keyboard.

A cracked hammer shank needed replacing. The piano also underwent “voicing,” a process in which each hammer is carefully filed and reshaped to produce an even volume and blended tone. This work ensures consistent dynamic response from note to note, enhancing the instrument’s expressive range.

Further action regulation—such as adjusting hammer spacing by tightening small screws—improved responsiveness, particularly for repeated notes, and restored reliable touch sensitivity. The pedals were adjusted, and the front key slip (the wooden panel just below the keys) was repaired as well.

[Image: Master piano technician Asami Alberti tuning the Petrof grand piano]

To complete the process, the piano received a “double tuning,” helping to stabilize pitch and maintain evenness—especially important given the summer temperature fluctuations in the sanctuary.

We are grateful for the expertise of Asami Alberti, a master piano technician from New York City, who dedicated over 20 hours across two days to this project. Working late into the evening, she ensured every detail met her exacting standards.

Thanks to this careful work, our piano now offers enhanced musical sensitivity, a richer tonal quality, and a more responsive touch. It is truly a gift to our worship, enabling musicians to express musical lines with greater beauty and nuance. We look forward to enjoying this remarkable instrument for many years to come.

Lynn Losch

Music Ministry

Summer Mission Trip

(Details to follow)

Under the Deacons Bench

At Newtown Presbyterian Church, the Board of Deacons is a working group of eighteen members that serves our church and our community. We have two primary areas of ministry that include Food Ministry and Care Ministry. Both show the love of Jesus Christ through our labors.

Those who feel called to serve as Deacons here at NPC have regular duties, such as visitation, sending cards and notes to shut-ins, delivering flowers, providing meals for members in need, and offering transportation to members for doctors’ appointments and church services.

Deacons organize and serve at funeral luncheons. We provide Thanksgiving and Easter meals to those in our community who are less fortunate. And, in addition, the Deacons host Fellowship Hour in Ettenger Hall each Sunday, September through May.

This ministry is one of presence so that in providing care and compassion to the members of our church, the Deacons are a truly valued group.

Teaching Young Minds Is Important Work!

Every year during the first week in May, schools throughout the area celebrate those professionals who nurture and instruct our children. On Wednesday, May 6, the Preschool Committee along with the Session, honored our preschool staff with a breakfast to show appreciation for all they do each day. Thank you Jill Mahle, Ursula Nicholson, Bernadette Lavin, Aimee O’Connell and Jeannie Palmieri for your dedication to our youngest learners.
